January 30 - 9th block of 2nd semester

Triangle Unit Test is this Friday!
Today in class, HW #7 (2 fill-in-the-blank proofs) was collected for a 4-pt grade.
Results of the last quiz over Triangle Congruence were shared individually.  Students who scored less than 10/13 can come during advisory on Tuesday to study their quiz and re-take a different quiz.
HW #8 (attached below) is the beginning of the Triangle Unit Review.  It is due Wednesday. It will also help students prepare to re-take the last quiz.
Tomorrow is also the last chance to re-take the first quiz of the semester, which was worth 22 pts.  If you made 8/22 or 12/22 on that quiz, your grade is currently quite low and needs to be raised by a re-take.
Today in class we took the ASPIRE Interim test for early high school mathematics (36 multiple choice questions).  Data from this test will be used for math placement for next year.

January 26 - 8th block of 2nd semester

Today we quizzed over Triangle Congruence.  Most students thought they did well. You all wanted me to count this quiz 24 pts.  It is 13 pts (2 pts for the question about which triangles are congruent and why). The average score is 9.15 - a whopping 70%.
Your test is coming soon!  Monday we will take the APSPIRE Interim and you will have another practice worksheet on naming congruent triangles and which reason allows you to say so. You will also have two more fill-in-the-blank flowcharts.  Wednesday will be a review and master day, and the test will be at the beginning of class on Friday, February 3.
Today's goal was to get better at naming segments, angles, and understanding and writing the flowcharts.  We also did some question on corresponding parts of congruent triangles. Class ended with a quiz.  The two homework proofs are attached below, as well as the warm-up.
At least 7 of you need to come during advisory on Friday to study the previous quiz and re-take with a different quiz over the same topic. The average grade in class right now is 69% (admitted: this includes three folks who are never here), but still, it is our lowest ever average.  Time to do re-takes and kick in the effort level!

Today was our seventh block of class this semester.  We are nearing the end of our unit.
Upcoming:  quiz Thursday over Triangle Congruence (no flowcharts).  Study Homeworks 4-6.
Aspire Interim on Monday morning during class.
Friday, February 3 - Test over Triangles: like first two quizzes plus flowcharts.
Today we had a warm-up that reviewed corresponding parts, naming congruent triangles, reasons, etc.  Then we converted that review into a flowchart proof. Notes are attached below, as well as blank flowchart proof templates.
We practiced naming congruent triangles and giving reasons for them. Then we modeled and copied a proof of the first problem from the worksheet.  Then students did the second problem just like it.
HW #6 - finish the in-class worksheet attached below. For problems 6-7, do a flowchart proof. HW, template, examples attached below, as well as the warm-up.
We finished up with a homework quiz over HW #5 worth 4 pts.

January 20 - Block 6 of 2nd semester

Today was the 6th block of our semester.  We are still working on triangle congruence shortcuts: SSS, SAS, ASA, SAA.
Everyone can do this if you put your mind to it!
We began with a warm-up on a pale yellow sheet that needs to be glued into your notebook. It has great notes on triangle congruence at the top, and at the bottom is the example that students worked out in class.  This plus the hot pink sheet from block 5 make up good resources for this unit.
We also did a practice worksheet on triangle congruence in class, found out our quiz scores on first quiz (posted on gradebook), and learned to model a flowchart proof or explanation of why two triangles are congruent.
Homework 5 is very short (worksheet attached below); it involves deciding and describing what two parts of two triangles need to be congruent when only two congruent parts are given and you want to show the triangles congruent by a given reason.  For example:  two triangles are marked with one pair of corresponding angles congruent and the side next to it congruent.  You are asked to find another part to make it SAS, so you need the sides on the other side of the angle to be congruent.

January 17 - Block 5 of 2nd semester

Today in class our focus was Triangle Congruence Shortcuts.  We did an investigations to learn about ASA shortcut.  We determined that ASA, SAA, SSS, and SAS all work, but SSA and AAA do not.  We practiced recognizing the difference among them.
A grade was taken for 4 points over HW #3. We looked at answers to #2 and #3, with questions available.
Students were able to start HW #4 over triangle congruence and understand what it means to list the three congruent parts that tell you that two triangles are congruent.
If you were not in class on last Friday, then come tomorrow during advisory to make up your quiz.
HW #4 is attached below. The investigation and warm-up from class today are also attached below.

January 13 - block 4 of 2nd semester

Today students took a Google Forms Quiz to demonstrate mastery over triangle inequalities, triangle sum, and isosceles triangle properties.  It was 12 questions and will count 24 pts.
We also did an investigation to learn about SSS and SAS triangle congruence shortcuts.
HW #3 covers this new content and is attached below. A grade was taken over HW #2.  Students did not seem to understand that they needed to state that 3 pairs of angles were congruent and 3 pairs of sides were congruent for each problem that said "give a congruent statement" and "state which parts are corresponding".  Together this requires 7 congruence statements for each of this type of problem.  Some students need to go back and do this and bring their homework back for a re-grade.

January 11 - Block 3 of 2nd semester

Today in class we began to get understanding about what it meand for two pologyons to be congruent. The note-building activing on congruent polygons is downloadable below. HW #1 was graded for 4 pts, and students were able to see answers and ask questions about the homework.  This homework makes a good study guide for the quiz tomorrow.
We practiced interpreting parts of congruent polygons and got a new homework (attached below) over this content.
We then practiced for the quiz tomorrow with an online "kahoot" quiz.
The quiz Friday is over triangles inequality (what will make a triangle), putting sides or angles in order based on size, using triangle sum and definition of isosceles triangles , linear pairs, and vertical angles to find missing angles in sketches.  It will be an online quiz.

Second Semester - Blocks 1 &2 - January 4-9, 2017

On the first block of the semester, students did an investigation to discover what is true about the length of the three sides of a triangle (the two short ones added together have to be more than the long one). And also, we discovered that the longest side of a triangle is always opposite the largest angle; the shortest side is always opposite the smallest angle.
Students did worksheets in class to apply these two truths and returned them to the substitute teacher.  There was no homework.
Second block:
You may start a new notebook for this semester.  Get a folder to keep homework handouts in.
We had a warm-up to practice applying the new triangle inequality truths from the last block. Also we worked on applying triangle sum and definition of isosceles triangle.
After the warm-up, we did partner work on triangle sum, linear pairs, vertical angles, and definition of isosceles triangle.  These sheets were turned in to Ms. Bogart for a grade.
The homework assignment #1 was a hand-written handout that applies all of this new truth about tirangles. It is quick and fairly easy.  Please finish the last page of the handout from last Thursday over putting angles and sides in order.
