Today we were wrapping up our "building blocks" mini-unit and proceeding on to investigate properties of linear pairs, vertical angles, and also corresponding, alternate interior, and alternate exterior when parallel lines are cut by a transversal.
We added the following terms to geometric truth (on pp 56-7 in new book): right triangle, acute triangle, obtuse triangle, scalene triangle, equilateral triangle, and isosceles triangle (at least two congruent sides). Copy good sketches (copy the labeled sketch below isosceles triangle). Part of HW #9 is over these triangles.
We learned about the process of investigating inductively and coming to conclusions that we will record in Geometric Truth as conjectures.
So we decided that:
Linear Pairs are supplementary. Vertical angles are congruent. And when parallel lines are cut by a transversal, corresponding angles, alternate interiors and alternate exteriors are congruent. The converse is also true, but we did not write it up. It allows us to determine if lines are parallel based on angle relationships. The three conjectures to be written in Geometric Truth are attached below.
We also addressed the idea that we will now be doing homework where we apply our new truth and our fantastic minds to figure out missing angles in sketches. This means: do the homework with conjectures handy; stop and reflect on "what do I know"; use a calculator for the arithmetic.
Students who have not yet taken the quiz need to do so NOW... please come Friday during your lunch or at 8:15 am or stay after school at 2:15 or 3:50 pm.
HW #9: p 58: 1-7, 12, p 134: 1-6 (answers only), pp 141-2: 1-6 (name the angle pair relationship that helps you - CA, AIA, AEA, LP, VA). Add a sketch and definition for transversal (top of p 138) to your Geometric Truth. Make sure you have transferred C-3 from bottom of p 139 to your Geometric truth also. Don't write up C-4 yet, please.
Several students need to show me their Geometric Truth for a 5 pt grade. Remember that it must include all the terms on the attachment in the next post. Make good labeled sketches.
