0B just had their last day of class! Please bring textbooks as soon as possible if you have not already. Scroll down to earlier posts to find FR #2 handout, Topic List, &/or FR #1 textbook assignment. All classes: On the day of the test, please bring for a 15 pt grade: FR #1 (from textbook with work shown), FR #2 handout with work shown, any in-class work from the two review days. First review day included a warm-up to "get back" the concepts from similarity and trigonometry. It is on a previous post. We went over the textbook problems from pp 404-6 and 528-30, but not the trig. All of these will be attached below. Second day will (or did) include: reworking problems from old Polygon/Quadrilateral/Algebra tests, returning the Circle Test and making sure that you understand all of your mistakes, viewing Volume Quests. And answers to worksheets (FR #2) with time for questions. Answers to worksheets are posted below. Be smart... do not look at the answers until you are finished with the work. AFTER YOU HAVE ATTENDED BOTH REVIEW CLASSES DO THE FOLLOWING: 1) Finish any review problems you have not done yet from the assignments or the extra problems on the handout. 2) Have you worked every problem correctly? Check. Rework. 3) Think about what you did in the last two classes... what do you still need work on? You should know now. 4) Take your Topic List and go back through finding problems that relate to each topic. Think about how this could become a multiple choice question. Read through Geometric Truth or textbook for hints about topics that still confuse you a bit. Try problems in the textbook and come by to check answers. Finals are almost here! Thanks to all of you who came and got your make-up "Volume Quest" done. Students should see their scores in the next block. 0B is a block ahead. They have already had one review day for the final and received the handout for the second review assignment (attached below). Also attached is the Final Review Topic List (typed while Ms. Bogart was staring at the final... so a highly useful list). The first review assignment (due next block for all other classes) is Similarity: pp 404-6: 1-3, 7, 10-12, 16, 18, 24 Right Triangles: p 528-9: 2-3, 5-8, 10, 14, 23, 25 Trig - p 591: 1-3, 6-8, 1-11, 17-19. (read pp 584-6 for help). During block 41, we did a warm-up to prepare for the quiz, checked review answers, asked questions, and then took the Volume Quest in the last half of class. The Topic List was handed out along with FR #1 listed above. The next two blocks will include plenty of practice each day. Some of the practice will be re-working parts of old tests, which will not be available on this website. The first day started with a warm-up to retrieve a conceptual understanding of dilation, similarity, and connections to right triangle trigonometry. That activity is attached below also.
We are getting close!!!
The review assignment is due on the following days for each class: 0B is due Monday, May 13. 1st, 2nd, and 4th are due Tuesday, May 14. 6th is due Wednesday, May 15. Here is the review assignment: p 578-9: 1-12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 29. Show work. Block 40 for 4th period included learning about surface area of a sphere. SA is 4*pi*r^2. SA of a hemisphere is 3*pi*r^2. (The base is an extra circle.) Block 40 for 6th period involved learning about both volume and surface area of spheres. See previous post for more formulas. 4th period did 4 problems from p 567 to practice surface area. 6th period did 1-6 on p 563 and 1-6 on p 567-8 in class to practice volume and surface area. 6th period needs to finish their problems from class as well as the homework assigned. In all but 6th we did the following problems in class: p 560:9, p 467:5-6, p 564: 8,15, p 555:12. If you were not here, you need to do those problems. Some classes had already done some of these for homework (0B for sure). 0B will quiz for their next block. All other classes will have one more day of wrap-up for the unit, with some trig ratio practice thrown in. Everyone got to see their unit circle quiz today. I will try to have all grades posted before I leave school on Fri, May 10. HW #14 or #15, (depending on your class period) - is p 567-8: 6,8,10, p 564: 7, 9-13, 17, p 555:10-11. Some classes may have already done some of these problems. If so, do not do them again. 6th needs to finish the problems mentioned above, plus these from the previous list: p 568:10, p 564: 7, 9-13, 17. Some answers: p 568: 6 - SA is 144 Pi or 452.4 square cm; 8 - 2 gallons, 10 a) appr 3082 square feet, b) 13 gallons, c) 9568 bushels. p 564: 7) 18 Pi or appr 56.6 cubic meters, 9) 148/3 Pi cubic meters or about 155; 10) the same volume; 11) 9 in, 12) 3 cm; 13) 8193/3 Pi cubic cm or appr 8579 ; 17) lithium. p 554: 10) appr 1502 lbs, 11) appr 192.4 gal. (Conversions are in the text above the problems... get cubic feet and convert.) Today we took a quiz over the unit Circle for 24 pts. If you missed class, you need to make this up in class next time. I will be getting all grades posted within the next 48 hours. If you still see a mistake after that, show me your graded paper as I go around the room taking grades. We are wrapping up the 3-D/Volume Unit in most classes. Quiz dates (42 pts, topic list distributed next class): Mon, May 13 - 0B Tues, May 14 -1st, 2nd, 4th Wed, May 15, 6th Because of differing schedules, we are still slightly off and the assignments listed are as accurate as I can locate. It has been brought to my attention that I did not put the 4th period assignment on the screen, so I am guessing on that one. New content today by class: All classes did a warm-up over unit circle (2 problems) and a "solid of revolution" problem on graph paper. That problem is attached below. 1st - 2nd: we demonstrated that the volume of a sphere is 2/3 of the volume of a cylinder with the same radius and a height of 2r (a "square" cylinder). The volume of that cylinder is 2*Pi*r^3. 2/3 of that is 4/3 * Pi * r^3. So a hemisphere is 2/3 instead of 4/3. We went through an inductive proof (from the textbook) about the surface area of a sphere, which is 4*Pi*r squared. A hemisphere is 3*Pi*r squared because it has a base that is an "extra" circle. In 4th period, we did not get to the surface area, we learned about volume of irregular solids and working with density, mass, and volume in relationship. This information is well-explain on p 558 of textbook. In 0B we finished up all content for the unit as listed in 1st and 2nd with a little bit longer assignment. In 6th, we are a day behind. We did get to displacement and density and a quick explanation (with beans) for the volume of a sphere. Homework #14 1st-2nd: p 563:1-6, P 567: 1-4,8. Show work and use of formula. On 1-3 on p 567, just do surface area, not volume. 4th: p 559:1-7, p 563:1-7. HW #13 - B day 0B - p 560:9, p 563-4: 1-6, 10-11, p 567-8: 1-6, 10-11 6th - p 559-60: 1-7,9, p 539-70: 27-29, 32-35. Quizzes will be graded by the next class. Final review materials will start going out Monday next week. Attached: notes over volume and surface area of sphere; quiz topics for unit quiz, solid of revolution problem and answers.
Quiz Mon-Tues on Unit Circle. There is a link below to answers for degrees, radians, and coordinates on unit circle. You can scroll down and find two different posts with links to Khan Academy videos that are helpful (one says it's about radians, one says intro to unit circle).
READ CAREFULLY FOR HOMEWORK CONTENT: Thursday-Friday classes were not at all consistent with the homework. Homework numbers are off on A day and B day as well. I would recommend that you get the homework from a member of your class. I know that every class had problems from p 554: 1-7. Some classes had p 560: 1-7. Some classes had problems from section 2 about pyramids and cones. From pp 550-552: every class should have been assigned at some point in time: 1-9, 14, 16-17, 19. So if you haven't done those yet, get them done. 4th and 6th have not learned about displacement and density yet, so have not been assigned the problems on p 560. Quiz on Mon-Tues will be at the end of class. All classes will learn about volume and surface area of spheres. By Thursday, all but 6th period will have finished new content for the year! Answers to p 554:1-7: (of course you must show work) 1) 58.5 cubic inches, 2) about 55.4 cubic cm, 3) 15 cm 4) 11 cm, 5) 5 cm, 6) tall is smaller, about 63 cubic inches, shorter is about 82 cubic inches, 7) 257 cubic feet. If you have trouble solving for a dimension algebraically, look at the examples on p 553. PAY ATTENTION! Except for 1st and 2nd block, every class is in a different place and has different homework. You will have to read carefully to find your assignment.
Our current topic: naming of solids (____hedron, ______ prism, _____ pyramid, etc.), Volume of prisms and cylinders: V = BH, where B is the area of the base and H is the perpendicular height of the solid; volume of pyramids and cones: V = 1/3 BH. You still need to know all of your area formulas from your notes for the area unit because those will be used for the B in the formulas above. In 4th period, we did not get to pyramids and cones because of tornado warning. So 4th period HW #12b is p 550: 1-6, 8-15. On B day, 0B is trying to get ahead because of early finals. Zero Hour: added "cone" and a better definition of "cylinder" to geometric truth, shared about figures that we already defined and their parts, practiced a bit of naming and sketching, and then worked on volume formulas for prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones. 0B also learned about solids of revolution (take a 2 dimensional figure in coordinate plane, spin around axis, find volume). We practiced in class and need to finish if you did not: p 445: 1-6, and p 450: 1-6. This was also practiced in 1st and 2nd period, who took notes from the board about how to find these volumes. (These notes are not available here... please get from a friend... very simple.) 6th period was also assigned the same practice in class. 4th period did not get any practice and only learned about prism and cylinder volume. 0B HW #11b: Finish p 450:1-6 and p 455: 1-6. Also assigned: p 545: 8-15, p 550: 7-9, 14, 16. 1st and 2nd did not get quite as far. Their homework is the same as 0B, it is just numbered 12b instead of 11b. A grade was taken over the unit review. NEXT ASSESSMENT UPCOMING: UNIT CIRCLE QUIZ ON MON-TUES - 24 PTS. 6 PROBLEMS JUST LIKE UNIT CIRCLE PROBLEMS ON THE LAST TEST. |
